The Brown Hornets' CD Release @ The Horseshoe

I've been waiting for this for quite a while, but the Brown Hornets have finally released their self-titled CD, and it's great!

Thank God (or whomever) that the Blackie & The Rodeo Kings gig (also a CD release event) was an early show. (See previous entry.) I still had plenty of time (on Friday, May 4) to get my ass down to the Horseshoe. I even managed to see Saigon Hookers full set ahead of the Hornets.

The lads refrained from bowling down beer bottles with melons this time, but they had plenty of fresh produce on hand (mainly bananas and pineapple). It's cool that a group can kind of "trademark" themselves, over and above their great music. I'll never eat a banana again without thinking of The Brown Hornets!

The group is everything a crowd at a live show wants... great tunes, great stage presence, lots of banter with the audience, and even wandering out there while singing or playing.

There were lots of hot women in the crowd too, dancing up a storm. As the show passed the half way point, the dancers decided that hopping onstage was better than slipping on banana peels, so it got pretty crowded up there.

And, of course, the evening wouldn't be complete without Danny pulling out a fresh loaf of Wonder Bread and a jar of peanut butter. You'd think he had four hands as he made peanut butter and banana sandwiches while playing his keyboard and singing away like nothing abnormal was happening.

If you haven't seen them, this is one group you really have to watch for. It looks like the next Toronto show is at the Bovine on June 16. Look for other shows in the region at their MySpace.

I've been experimenting with different ways to include photos beyond what you see here in the Chronicles. You can click the Showcase button left of this window and see a couple of video clips and a Quicktime slide show with music if you like (they load pretty slowly, so be patient).

You can also click this link and see a more conventional slide show. With that link you'll have the option of playing a tune at the same time (start that up first), and the choice of running the slide show or just looking at enlargements of the photos one at a time. You decide!

(I'm also looking for tips on better software for this kind of stuff, so send an email if you think you have a better solution.)
