Canada Day Freebies & Summer Folk Festivals

Although many of us live music fans rarely go out until well after the sun has gone down, summertime is a great season for those who enjoy daytime shows... many of which are free and family-friendly.

Canada Day is just around the corner, and there will be events all across Toronto well before the fireworks start happening.

Here are two of the freebies that complement each other time wise on July 1...

The 5th Annual CANADA DAY JAM is a country-flavoured afternoon at Sunnyside Park (1755 Lake Shore Boulevard West, on the lake, south of High Park, near Parkside Drive). It runs from noon 'til 9pm.

The lineup includes....
The Road Hammers, Aaron Pritchett, Corb Lund, Jason Blaine and Prairie Oyster! Click here for the rest the the details.

Some of us will max out on country before 9pm, so why not just head east along the lake shore to Harbourfront Centre.

At the Main Stage, you'll be able to see Do, Make, Say, Think at 8pm and Final Fantasy at 9:30pm. Both are about as far from country as it's possible to get. Click for details.

And, then there are the folk festivals. Why not spend a few days in the great outdoors taking it all in?

As folk festivals go, the Mariposa Folk Festival has to be Canada's oldest and most famous.

It's not far from Toronto near Orillia, and a good chance to work on the tan while getting some fresh air and listening to some great entertainers. Headliners include Gordon Lightfoot, Serena Ryder, Hawksley Workman, Susan Aglukark and Don McLean.

Now here's something ironic that I have to share. Just up the road from Orilla, one of the best known folkies of all time, Bob Dylan, is cashing in his chips and performing at Casino Rama. Coincidence? Possibly. Another coincidence is that the cheapest ticket to one of Dylan's two shows is $80. The cost of the entire weekend at Mariposa is $80!

Roughly a month later, and only for those willing to travel out west, there's the Edmonton Folk Festival. It's popular and growing fast enough annually that it may called "Mariposa West" one day. It's held in the middle of the city in the river valley at the spacious Gallagher Park August 9-12.

It's a ways to go, but I'll be checking it out this year.

Headliners include... Nanci Griffith, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Blue Rodeo among others.

4-day passes are reported to be 97% sold-out already.
