CMW - Tonight through Saturday
Tonight's the night! I hope you all have your wristbands ready. I won't repeat what I've already said in the previous few posts.
Robert Everett-Green and Carl Wilson, entertainment writers for the Globe & Mail have picked these acts as their Top 10 Must Sees...
If you can grab a copy of EYE or NOW out on the street, you can also check out their recommendations. While it's harder to go through online, NOW features some reviews here, and EYE has a CMW Guide plus additional reviews here.
Naturally, the master guide is at the CMW webite, and it's not quite as bad as I originally said it was. Hopefully, if you bought a wristband, they gave you a pocket guide too.
So, tap into those sources to map out your route over space and time.
Some like to see the bands they know and love. That's cool. Find 'em and pay them a visit. Just keep in mind that they're 45 minute sets at best, so you might want to wait until your absolute favourites are back to headline another time. On the other hand, you can't beat the price at CMW. You may pay an arm and a leg to see some of these groups later.
We have a different strategy. We like to explore. The unfamiliar are more appealing. It's a discovery event!
Whatever your approach, use your intuition too. You'll find that some of the most positively reviewed groups are the ones with the cash to hire a PR agency that gets in the face of the press and buys them a few drinks, slips them some free CDs, etc. A lot of up-and-coming talented acts won't have that luxury.
So, at very least, throw in a couple "total unknowns" into the mix. Unknown or not, they'll probably have a MySpace where you can sample their music first if you have the time. You could be disappointed or you might find a rare gem.
But, by all means....... ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
