Jeff Healey, RIP & More on Canadian Music Week

Sadly, blues guitarist Jeff Healey died yesterday after a life-long battle with cancer. He will be missed as a TO-treasure. Why not pay tribute by visiting his club during Canadian Music Week? His is one of about 40 venues participating in this annual event. I'm sure his spirit will still be in the room.

We put quite a few details on CMW in our last post, so we won't repeat them again here.

We were hoping that EYE or NOW would have recommendations out by now, but I guess they'll be saving them for this week's issues. We have some suggestions in our recommended event calendar, but they are far too few to do justice to this major event. We can only suggest that you scan through the schedule at http://cmw.net . It's a pain in the ass doing it that way, but with no pocket guide with day-by-day performances, you're stuck with the alphabetical band list or the crude schedule page with limited search.

If you see any CMW staffers out there this week, complain about this, and maybe they'll eventually fix the problem in future years.

But don't ignore the event because of this. There are so many awesome acts to see this week.

If you've never gone before, expect a new act on the hour every hour at each venue. You'll see a 45 minute set, leaving 15 minutes for bands to swap equipment and you to change venues if you wish. The weather outlook is 0C to -5C for Thursday to Saturday, so dress accordingly if you're going to be club hopping.

Most of all, enjoy Canada's best up-and-coming musicians and many acts from around the world.

One final note... wristbands are the way to go for the most entertainment for just $35, but keep in mind that some of the larger venues billing CMW acts will not let you in with a wristband. Complain about that too. It's contrary to the spirit of Canadian Music Week.
